Ilyas Mahmud oglu Afandiyev, who had invaluable merits in the development of our national prose, drama, stage, literary and artistic thought in the 20th century, was born on May 26, 1914, in the city of Fuzuli.
Ilyas Afandiyev's first book "Letters from the Village," was published in 1939. The book contains his eponymous novella and several short stories.
The period from the 1960s to the 1980s is considered the most productive in the creative work of Afandiyev, who was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Republic in 1960. During these years, he published notable novellas and novels that gained fame as high literary and aesthetic examples of contemporary Azerbaijani literature. Some of these works include "The Cornucal Bridge " (1960), "Three Friends Beyond the Mountains" (1963), "The Tale of Sarykoyneke and Valeha" (1976-78), " Do not look back, old man " (1980), and "Shotgun" (1981).
The playwright laid the foundation for lyrical-psychological drama on the Azerbaijani stage with the play "You Are Always with Me" (1964). Plays such as "Bright Roads", "Spring Waters," "The Ataev’s Family," "My fault", "I Can't Forget," "Destroyed diaries", "The strange Boy," "The Song Remained in the Mountains," and "The Voice Coming from the Gardens" are among the highlights of theater repertoires.
With his historical dramas such as " Khurshidbanu Natavan", “Sheikh Khiyabani”, “The Ruler and His Daughter", and others, he turned the narrative of our people's struggle for autonomy, the idea of independence, and the artistic representation of the freedom movement.
The author's stories written for children, such as "Hunting for gazelles", "Interesting case", "In the reserves", "The Tree of Lilacs", "On the trail", "The Tale of a Hunter" and "In the field was heard a tour" have also been included in middle school textbooks.
İlyas Afandiyev's literary analysis in each of the genres he applies for reflects the pivotal questions of the people, as well as important political and moral values, with a strong civic engagement.
Despite not adhering to the prevailing ideology throughout his creative career, he wrote works on topics that were prohibited at that time, such as Southern Azerbaijan and migration.
His works have been published multiple times in Russian, Turkish, and other languages, and monographs, doctoral, and candidate dissertations have been written about his creativity.
Ilyas Afandiyev has been honored for his valuable contributions to the development of national literature and the formation of the contemporary appearance of the Azerbaijani theater stage. He has been awarded numerous prizes and honors, including the honorary titles of "People's Writer" and "Distinguished Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan," as well as being awarded the "Shohrat" Order.
