Asgarov, the son of Salman Mammadam, a well-known Azerbaijani folklorist and prominent literary scholar, was born on May 20, 1884, in the Ganjali quarter of Shaki, in the family of a merchant. He received his first education in Ashgabat.

Salman Mumtaz, who has a great interest in science, learned Russian, Arabic, Persian and Urdu languages ​​perfectly by the age of 22.

In 1908-1909, in the magazines "Molla Nasreddin", "Zanbur", "Kalniyyat", "Tuti", "Brotherly Help", "Gunesh", "Sada", "Taraqi", "Iqbal", "Yeni Iqbal", "Achiq soz" etc. in the newspapers "Khortdan Bey", "Sagsagan", "Sarche", "Sarchagulubey", "Moz Bey", "Ashgabatli", "Turkmendost", "S. Asgarov", "S.M.", "Mumtaz" etc. His writings, satirical poem, article, letter and verse column were published under the signatures.

Salman Mumtaz traveled around Azerbaijan in 1920-1925 and managed to collect about 200 books, manuscripts and articles at his own expense, and published a series of articles under the name "Forgotten Leaves" in "Communist" newspaper.

It was Salman Mumtaz who first published the works of Imaduddin Nasimi, Molla Panah Vagif, Gasim Bey Zakir, Mirza Shafi Vazeh and others.

Mumtaz, a victim of Stalin's repression, was arrested in October 1937 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was shot in September 1941 in the city of Oryol while in prison. 270 manuscripts collected by him were destroyed during the arrest. Salman Mumtaz was acquitted posthumously by the Supreme Court of the USSR on November 17, 1956.

The memory of the selfless researcher of our cultural history lives on. Azerbaijan State Literary and Art Archive is named after him.
