The years of the World War II were the most difficult and terrible period that humanity faced in the 20th century. Explaining the determination and heroism of the Azerbaijani people in this war has serious scientific theoretical, political and practical importance.

The National Leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, said: "The people of Azerbaijan showed true examples of bravery and determination both on the battlefields and on the rear front during the World War II. In the short time since the start of the war, 87 fighter battalions and 1124 self-defense units were organized in the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan. 1941-1945 In the years, about 640,000 men and women of our republic went to the front.

On the night of May 8-9, 1945, German Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel signed the act of unconditional surrender, which marked the victory over fascism in the World War II.

Victory over fascism was the result of the joint effort, determination and sacrifice of all the peoples who participated in the war. More than 600,000 sons and daughters of the Azerbaijani people, who played a big part in this victory, died heroically in the battles. 130 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, 30 people were awarded with all three degrees of the Order of Glory, and more than 170 thousand of our soldiers and officers were awarded with various orders and medals.

Twice Hero of the Soviet Union Hazi Aslanov, Heroes of the Soviet Union Israfil Mammadov, Aslan Vazirov, Adil Guliyev, Ziya Bunyadov, Geray Asadov, Malik Maharramov, Mehdi Huseynzade, Generals Mahmud Abilov, Akim Abbasov, Tarlan Aliyarbeyov, Hajibaba Zeynalov contributed to the victory over fascism.

The contribution of the Azerbaijani people to the victory was not limited only to the front. In the war against fascism, our people showed true perseverance by showing incomparable labor skills on the battlefields as well as on the rear front, and worked day and night to meet the needs of the army.

Victory over fascism is celebrated as an official state holiday in Azerbaijan.
