On March 10, 1873, on the initiative of prominent intellectuals Hasan bey Zardabi, Najaf bey Vazirov and Asgar agha Gorani (Adigozalov), M.F. Akhundzade's "Adventure-Vaziri-Khani Lankaran" was performed by the troupe of theater lovers of the Baku Realni School at the "Noble Club". So, since that day the professional theater was founded in Azerbaijan.

The famous philanthropist-magnate Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev had a great service in the development of the Azerbaijani national theater. He built the first theater building in Baku.

It should be noted that the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev, who always treats artists with attention and care, signed a number of laws and orders in the field of the National Theater of Azerbaijan.

Thus, in 2006, the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On Theater and Theater Activities" was adopted in Azerbaijan. In the Law reflecting the modern stage of development of this ancient creative field, it was officially declared that the state attaches special importance to theater art. In 2007, President Ilham Aliyev signed another important document related to theater art - the Order "On the development of Azerbaijani theater art". On May 18, 2009, the head of state approved the State Program "Azerbaijani Theater in 2009-2019". "National Theater Day" was established in our country by the Order dated March 1, 2013. According to the order, taking into account the importance and role of the national theater in the development of national culture and the cultural life of the country, it was decided to celebrate March 10 as "National Theater Day" in the Republic of Azerbaijan. In addition, President Ilham Aliyev signed the Decree on the state level celebration of the 150th anniversary of the professional national theater of Azerbaijan on February 3, 2023.
