Today is the 150th anniversary of the distinguished Azerbaijani poet, playwright, and translator Abbas Sahhat.

Abbas Aliabbas oglu Mehdizade (Abbas Sahhat) was born into a religious family in Shamakhi in 1874. After graduating from the medical faculty of Tehran University in 1900 and mastering Russian, Arabic, Persian, and French, the young Abbas returned to Shamakhi in 1901. Alongside practicing medicine, he also taught classes in Azerbaijani language.

Abbas Sahhat published his first poem in 1904 in the newspaper "Shargi-Rus". In 1905, he published an article titled "What Should the New Poetry Be Like?" followed by poems such as "Poetic Speech", "Ode to Freedom", and "The Voice of Awakening". His works were regularly published in many journals and newspapers in Baku. His articles about the great Azerbaijani poet, his dear friend, and colleague Mirza Alekper Sabir held a special place among his contributions to the press during that period.

In 1912, poet's collection of poems "Broken Saz" was published, as well as a book of translations from European poets titled "Western Sun." Also during that time, his poem "The Courage of Ahmed" appeared, and in 1916, the romantic poem "Poet, Muse, and Townsman" was published.

Abbas Sahhat's creativity was greatly influenced by poets such as Nizami, Hafiz, and Saadi.

The citizen poet Abbas Sahhat, remembered with the verse "There is no person who does not love his homeland, and if there is, then there is no conscience," is more recognized for his poems on this subject. The poem titled "It is my homeland ", which begins with these famous lines, was written approximately a hundred years ago and is considered one of the most beautiful expressions of patriotism.

The writer Abbas Sahhat, who was also engaged in translation activities, translated the works of writers and poets such as Lermontov, Pushkin, Krylov, Maxim Gorky, Victor Hugo, and others into Azerbaijani.

Throughout his short life of 44 years, A. Sahhat, who fulfilled his educational mission with dignity, also wrote poems for children, such as "Mother and Father", "Father and Son", "Summer", "Bear and Lion", "Birds", and these poems, along with others, are still beloved by young readers today.

On this occasion, a large book exhibition "Abbas Sahhat - 150" opened at the National Library of Azerbaijan.

The exhibition presents the poet's works, translations, musical scores composed to his words, as well as books about his life and creativity in Azerbaijani and other languages.

The exhibition will run for one week.
