On the night of February 25 to 26, 1992, one of the most horrific chapters in Azerbaijani history, the Khojaly genocide, took place. The Armenian armed forces, in gross violation of international law and principles, launched an attack on the city of Khojaly with the participation of the 366th regiment of the former Soviet army stationed in Khankendi. They subjected the civilian population to unprecedented brutality.
During the Khojaly genocide, 613 people were killed, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly individuals. 1,275 residents were taken hostage, and the fate of 150 people remains unknown to this day. The city was completely destroyed. On that tragic night, 487 Khojaly residents were severely wounded. Eight families were entirely wiped out, 25 children lost both parents, and 130 children lost one parent. The city of Khojaly was left in ruins following the occupation.
On September 27, 2020, in response to the next provocation by the Armenian armed forces against our country, the glorious victory achieved in the Patriotic War, launched under the leadership of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, was written in golden letters in the history of our military. As a result of the localized anti-terrorist measures conducted by the Azerbaijani Army in Karabakh on September 19, 2023, the city of Khojaly was completely cleared of separatists. On October 15, 2023, President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev raised the Azerbaijani state flag in Khojaly, proving once again that the blood of the genocide victims had not been shed in vain, and their vengeance had been taken.
In memory of the Khojaly genocide victims, a virtual exhibition titled "February 26 - Khojaly Genocide" has been presented online at the National Library of Azerbaijan. This exhibition, which will forever remain in the history and memory of the Azerbaijani people, includes articles, photos, and literature published in the press about the Khojaly massacre, the mass graves discovered in the liberated territories, the horrific atrocities committed with unimaginable cruelty, and the genocidal policies carried out by the Armenians against Azerbaijanis. The exhibition also showcases works in Azerbaijani and various languages about the tragic moments of the Khojaly genocide.
