UNESCO, a specialized organization of the UN, is the world's largest intergovernmental forum for cooperation in the field of education, science, culture, information and communication. The charter of the organization was signed in London on November 16, 1945, and on November 4, 1946, UNESCO, consisting of 20 member states began its official activities. It is in close contact with the UN and its specialized agencies.
On June 3, 1992, the Republic of Azerbaijan became a member of UNESCO after regaining its independence. Regarding the development of UNESCO-Azerbaijan relations, Great Leader Heydar Aliyev took an important step and met with the Director General of UNESCO Federico Mayor in December 1993 while on an official visit to the Republic of France. The parties discussed among themselves the issue of expanding cooperation and prospective plans for its further development. According to the UNESCO charter, the member-state should first of all take appropriate measures by creating a National Commission to coordinate the activities of institutions dealing with education, science and culture with the work of UNESCO. Therefore, the necessary steps were taken to establish the National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for UNESCO, and Great Leader Heydar Aliyev signed an Order on this on February 21, 1994.
Today, relations between Azerbaijan and UNESCO are carried out continuously. In this direction, we should especially mention the purposeful activity of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The inclusion of the material and spiritual heritage of Azerbaijan in the list of rare works of UNESCO is the main indicator of international cooperation. Thus, the inclusion of mugham art, ashiq art, Novruz holiday, Icherisheher, art of tar performance in rare and masterpieces of UNESCO highlights the continuity of cooperation between Azerbaijan and this organization. Of course, there is a special role of the foundation, Mehriban Aliyeva in the inclusion of the rare heritage that have listed in this list.
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Azerbaijan becoming a member of UNESCO, a virtual exhibition of the same name was prepared by the employees of the National Library.
The virtual exhibition displays photos, examples of Azerbaijan's material and spiritual heritage included in the list of UNESCO's rare works, books related to the topic and articles published in periodicals.
