In February 1992, an unprecedented genocide was committed against the Azerbaijani population of Khojaly. As a result of this bloody tragedy, known as the Khojaly Genocide, thousands of Azerbaijanis were killed and captured, and the city itself was razed to the ground. On the night of February 25-26, 1992, with the help of the 366th regiment of the former USSR, the armed forces of Armenia captured the city of Khojaly.
Before the night of the tragedy, residents of Khojaly stayed in the city, and after the attack on the city began, they tried to leave the city to reach the nearest place inhabited by Azerbaijanis. However, this plan of theirs did not come true. The invaders who destroyed Khojaly committed special cruelty against the civilian population.
The brutal killing of hundreds of innocent residents of Khojaly was one of the bloodiest crimes committed during the armed conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
In accordance with the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Action Plan of the Ministry of Culture on the thirtieth anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, the staff of the Azerbaijan National Library named after M.F. Akhundzade prepared a virtual exhibition in English called "Khojaly genocide - 30". The main goal of preparing a virtual exhibition in English is to inform foreign readers about the Khojaly genocide. Books in English and photos with subtitles depicting the Khojaly tragedy are displayed in the virtual exhibition.
