This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ashyg Shakir, who stood out among the outstanding representatives of the twentieth-century Azerbaijani ashyg art for his individual performance qualities.

Having special role in the formation of the Shirvan ashyg environment in terms of new performance and creativity, he synthesized our mughams with saz melodies with high professionalism. He won great love among the people with his charming voice, also created beautiful examples of various forms of ashyg poetry. Along with his lyrical songs, the cheerful and playful songs he performed live forever in the memory of the people. Saz lovers will probably never forget his performances like “Kendimiz”, “Maral”, “Telli sazim”, “Ne bag bildi, ne de bagban”, “Shirvan Shikestesi”, “Doyme Kerem”, “Baku”, “Bala Nargiz".

Ashyg Shakir brought a new breath to ashyg art. He is still remembered with respect and love for his charming voice and unique performing skills.

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the outstanding ashyg, the staff of the National Library of Azerbaijan has prepared a virtual exhibition entitled "Ashyg Shakir – 100". The virtual exhibition features photos and poetry of the great master of words, as well as books and articles about his life and work.
