November 8 is celebrated as the day when the city of Shusha was liberated from occupation.
On September 27, 2020, in response to the large-scale front-line provocation by the Armenian armed forces, the Azerbaijani Army launched a counter-offensive operation, later called "Iron Fist". In the 44-day long Patriotic War, the name of Azerbaijan was written in golden letters in our history of Victory.
Shusha, the pearl and crown of Karabakh, the cradle of Azerbaijani culture which we lost on May 8, 1992, was returned by the leadership of our Commander-in-Chief and the bravery of our victorious army after 28 years, on November 8, 2020. Shusha is national pride, national identity, culture, art, and history for Azerbaijan. The planting of the flag by our Brave Army in Shusha and bringing this news to the people by the victorious Commander-in-Chief Mr. Ilham Aliyev proved that after 28 years our national pride, identity, culture, art and history have been liberated and even entered a new stage of development. The liberation of Shusha from the occupation meant the salvation of the beating heart of Karabakh.
Honorable President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev announced to the people that Shusha which is considered the historical city of Azerbaijan, the cultural center of the whole Caucasus, that has a military-strategic importance as well as a spiritual significance was liberated by our glorious army. The liberation of Shusha is a manifestation of the strength of our army, the unity of our people, and the leadership ability of our Commander-in-Chief.
The liberation of Shusha is the most glorious victory in the history of Azerbaijan in the last century. History has shown that during this period, the independent policy pursued by the President of Azerbaijan made our country a voice both in the region and in the world. Apart from expanding its military potential, Azerbaijan has also become a dictating party on the diplomatic front.
On the occasion of this historic day, by the employees of the Azerbaijan National Library named after M.F. Akhundzade a virtual exhibition called "Shusha is ours! Karabakh is Azerbaijan!" has been prepared. The virtual exhibition displays official documents, opinions of prominent Azerbaijani personalities about Shusha, photos, books about the 44-day Patriotic War, Shusha's history, culture, etc., and articles published in periodicals.
