Every year, 5th of May is celebrated as "International Day for the Protection of the Rights of the Disabled" all over the world, since 1992 by the decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The purpose of celebrating this day is to bring the protection of the rights of disabled and people with limited health facilities to the attention of the international community, to strengthen the integration of people from this category into society.

After our national leader Heydar Aliyev returned to political power in Azerbaijan for the second time, as in all fields, consistent measures have been taken to protect the rights of the disabled and protect their health, and a rich legislative base has been created in this area. The approval of the "State Program for the Protection of Human Rights" on June 18, 1998 is an expression of the high attention paid to the protection of human rights in our country, and is also of great importance in the protection of the rights of the disabled.

Today, the President of the country, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, is successfully continuing the adoption of legislative acts that create new legal opportunities for the social protection of persons with disabilities and the resolution of social issues. On December 28, 2006, the "National Action Plan for the Protection of Human Rights in the Republic of Azerbaijan" was approved, on December 27, 2011, the "National Action Program in the field of increasing the efficiency of the protection of human rights and freedoms in the Republic of Azerbaijan" was approved, for persons with disabilities new normative acts defining social, economic and legal guarantees were adopted.

On the occasion of this day, the staff of the National Library of Azerbaijan named after M.F. Akhundzade prepared a virtual exhibition called "Day of the International Protection of the Rights of the Disabled".
