Every year, May 9 is celebrated in Azerbaijan as the Day of Victory over fascism. Because during the Great Patriotic War, our people showed great examples of heroism and bravery both at the frontline and the rear. During the war, more than six hundred thousand brave sons and daughters of Azerbaijan were sent to the front, and Azerbaijani divisions passed the glorious battle route from the Caucasus to Berlin. The fact that more than 170,000 Azerbaijanis have been awarded orders and medals and 130 of our compatriots have been awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union is a clear proof of this. If Azerbaijani oil had not been sent to the front at that time, this war would not have ended in victory.
The names of our compatriots like Hazi Aslanov, twice awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union; Israfil Mammadov; Azerbaijani falcon Huseynbala Aliyev; Mehdi Huseynzadeh; Garay Asadov; Gafur Mamamdov, a sailor who shielded his chest to save his commander’s life; Ahmadiyya Jabrayilov, who was an active participant of the guerrilla movement and awarded the honorary title of “National Hero of France”; our female pilot Zuleykha Seyidmammadova; female sniper Ziba Salimova; ship captain Shovkat Salimova and others will always be remembered.
In this regard, the staff of Azerbaijan National Library has prepared a virtual exhibition entitled “9 May is the Day of Victory over fascism”. The virtual exhibition features thoughts of remarkable people of Azerbaijan on the Day of Victory, as well as photos, books and articles on the topic.
