Today marks the 99th anniversary of the National Library of Azerbaijan.

The National Library, which is the main library of Azerbaijan, is one of the largest national libraries and bookkeepers known not only in the Caucasus, and the European continent, but also in the whole world.

The library was established in 1922, and its official opening was on May 23, 1923. When the library was established, 5000 copies of books were given to its fund from the libraries of the Baku branch of the Imperial Technical Society and the libraries of the Baku Public Society.

In 1939, the library was named after the thinker, dramatist and educator Mirza Fatali Akhundov.

Over the years, the scope of activities of the library has expanded, dozens of new departments have been created, the number of literature in its funds has reached millions, and the number of employees has reached hundreds.

According to the Laws of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On Library Work" and "On Publishing Work", the National Library receives free compulsory copies of publications published in the territory of the country and based on them creates the archive fund of the Azerbaijani book.

Today, the National Library is a leading institution in the field of librarianship, bibliography and book studies, scientific-methodological center for all libraries of the country, it performs the functions of interlibrary subscription, national and recommended bibliography, international and domestic depository center by providing comprehensive library-bibliography and information service to readers.

National leader Heydar Aliyev emphasized in his speeches that "The library is a sacred place for the people, the nation, the society, a source of spirituality, knowledge, and intelligence. Therefore, constant respect for the library is one of the factors that demonstrate the culture of our people." It is no coincidence that our Great Leader, Mr. Heydar Aliyev, who highly appreciates science and culture, visited the National Library 4 times and donated hundreds of books from his personal library to the library.

In 2004, the Library was granted the status of "National Library" by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, which is the highest award given to the activity of our library.

On this occasion, a virtual exhibition called "Azerbaijan National Library" was prepared by the library staff. The decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan about the National Library, opinions of prominent persons, photos, publications of the library, books and articles related to the topic are displayed in the virtual exhibition.
